Common Household Poisons for Pets

Dogs and cats can become seriously ill if they accidentally ingest certain substances that are toxic to them. There are several possible poisonous substances that you might have in your home. Some of the more common kinds include prescription and over-the-counter medications, cleaning products, pest control products and certain foods. For example, chocolate, raisins, grapes, the artificial sweetener xylitol and onions are all toxic to dogs and cats. All of these foods and substances should be kept in places that are out of your pet’s reach.

Signs of Poisoning in Pets

How can you tell if your pet has been poisoned? There are many different symptoms that can occur. Some of the more common signs include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures, appetite loss and irregular heartbeat. If one or more of these signs is present and you have reason to believe that your pet might have ingested something poisonous, you should seek veterinary care immediately.

What to Do About Suspected Pet Poisoning

Pets can quickly become dangerously ill depending on the type of poisonous substance they consumed. In some cases, kidney failure or liver failure can occur. Pets that might have been poisoned should be examined and treated as quickly as possible. This helps lower the risk of potentially life-threatening complications. Keep in mind that older pets and puppies or kittens are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill from poisonous substances.
